Reflections, on the whole are not to be trusted. They simply are not there; and the more you go looking for them, the less they are there to find. They are constantly in a state of flux, ever-changing as you move toward and away from them; fleeting in and out of your vision, a glimpse of some promise or other.

But they are fascinating, and the subject of many a day spent looking for them.

They cast off less light, so bracket, and if you really want them to disappear, try a polarising filter.

Making the Ordinary Extra-Ordinary

The world inflicts itself on us in different ways, from the great and wonderful to the small and overlooked.

It is this small and overlooked that often has a greater impact on the way we live; litter, burnt out cars, empty cans, bottles, newspapers with headlines lost in the wind, billboards proclaiming the new religion with promises of an afterlife ... if only you buy their latest techno-freak-gadget-lifestyle-accessory,otherwise you are damned to a life less ordinary than Mr Blogs down the road.

Bill Posters was a man who got it right, but then lost it. His work remains, and remains and ... remains, until he comes back, rips it up and posts it all over with born again posters.

Why do we take photographs?

What is it that draws us to the complexities of operation, of technique, of imagination and creativity, that finally produces a moment in time. A snapshot frozen forever. A moment culled from space and time and held in the hand of eternity.

For ever and all time there for us to look at and contemplate and in doing so we are irrevocably drawn back to that moment, and it is lived all over again and again and again.

The trick is to not be apart from the moment when experiencing it.

What kind of society do we live in?

I took the five photographs below on playing fields and waste ground behind Feltham train station. It was an overcast day, but there was a chance the sun would make an appearance, so I brought black and white and colour film. In the end, at that visit, I only exposed the B&W. It was getting late, there were crowds of teenagers congregating, obviously wondering what I was doing.

I decided to call it a day after one roll of film. I can take care of myself, but there is no use inviting trouble.

These overgrown statues of rust are the artistic product of joyriders. Driven to within inches of their lives and then set alight to the god of rebellion. Juveniles (?) that have nothing better to do in a society that doesn't really care. A throw away society, only now its not always the consumer products that are the only thing thrown away.

Have you ever noticed how clannish we are, probably without even knowing it.

I went out cycling today, down the country lanes of sunny Berkshire. Wonderful weather, but very hot.

Practically every other cyclist, granted of the racing variety, that I met nodded a 'hello'. These are complete strangers, whose only bond is the bike they are riding.

It is the same with cars - own a Mini and every other mini owner will instantly be your friend. In fact it goes for every other clique that there is. Perhaps this could be an Axiom of Likeness, and what a wonderful thing it is. However it never seems to apply to the ordinary, mundane , everyday reality of existence. Have you ever spoke to anyone on the rush hour tube?

A little piece of Heaven

Having always been interested in the stars above us, I recently decided to photograph the lunar eclipse of 4th may.

I found a dark road just socuth of Ascot racecourse, (in southern England) and set up my tripod with a 70 - 162mm lense on a 3x convertor. I loaded Fuji Sensia 400 transparency film and fired away. The moon, just coming out of penumbral shadow (if that is the right term)appeared about 6mm diameter on the 35mm film.

The results, though a little soft, were very encouraging. I will have to learn to upload them, I will in the future.

There was something very relaxing and spiritual about watching the heavens in the dark on your own at 11:00pm on a spring night.

The exposure was 1/125 @ f11 bracketed both ways.

Photography lets me shape the world as i see it and as I think I see it. It is a snapshot of a moment in time, frozen forever, coupled with infinite possibilities and glimpses of what might be.
